Hot pools and Health Spas

New Zealand is known for its unique geographical location on the Pacific tectonic plate that makes it the most thermally active and exciting place on the planet. Large amount of geothermal activity causes the warm water to bubble up through the earth’s crust to form hot pools. These pools often contain minerals dissolved from the rocks they seeped through.

People across the globe travel to New Zealand to soak in naturally- heated thermal pools surrounded by mountains, forests or lakes, treating one’s self to a relaxing therapeutic treatment in a health spa. For centuries, locals have enjoyed these hot pools, with some believing that sitting in mineral water helps with medical problems.

Rotorua is popular for its geothermal features including the pink and white terraces which were discovered more than 170 years ago and considered to be the eighth wonder of the world until the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. The hot, mineral- rich geothermal waters and mud in other areas of Rotorua became revered for their healing properties as people travelled from all over the world to seek the mystical health benefits.

Nicknamed the Thermal Wonderland, the Rotorua hotpools of Wai-O-Tapu are home to one of the most colourful and diverse geothermal parks in New Zealand. It features the largest mud pool in New Zealand which was once a large mud volcano after erosion destruction in 1920s. A magical feature is the Lady Knox Geyser, a magnificent geyser which erupts daily, shooting water over 10 meters into the air.
